To all to whom these Presents shall come know ye that for divers good causes and considerations one hereunto moving, but more especially in consideration of the good deportments and meritorious services of a certain Negroe man named Tom, heretofore my slave. I have emancipated, liberated, and entirely freed from service and by these presents do emancipate, liberate and entirely free from service the said Negroe man named Tom, so that in future he shall be entitled to enjoy all the privileges of a free Negroe, pursuant to the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in such cases made and provided, given under my hand and seal at the County of Albemarle in the State of Virginia, this first day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety nine and in the twenty third year of the Independence of the United States of America.
