This Indenture was made and entered into this seventh day of April in the year one thousand eight hundred and thirty between William Armistead of the County of Amherst of the first part and Frances Lewis and her five children, Edwin, Frances, Mary Elizabeth, Laura Sirina, Louisa Seldon, and Ellen Lee also of the said county of the second part. Witnesseth that the said William Armistead for and in consideration of his promising and agreement to, and with the said Frances Lewis, and in consideration of the faithful services of her the said Frances Lewis, and for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which he bears toward the said Edwin Frances, Mary Elizabeth, Laura Sirina, Louisa Seldon, and Ellen Lee who are his natural children by the said Frances Lewis and whom he hereby acknowledges as such and for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to him the said William Armistead in hand paid by the said Frances Lewis, Edwin Frances, Mary Elizabeth, Laura Sirina, Louisa Seldon and Ellen Lee at and before the signing and ensealing [sic] hereof the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged. The said William Armistead doth hereby covenant and agree to and with the said Frances Lewis, Edwin Frances, Mary Elizabeth, Laura Sirina, Louisa Seldon, and Ellen Lee that the said Frances Lewis shall enjoy her freedom from and after the death of William Armistead and be emancipated and free forever thereafter, to all intents and purposes and at perfect liberty to enter into all contracts and enjoy all the rights and immunities to which she would have been entitled had she been born free and the said Edwin Frances, Mary Elizabeth, Laura Sirina, Louisa Seldon, and Ellen Lee shall each and every of them, as they shall respectively arrive the said Edwin Frances to twenty one years of age, and the said Mary Elizabeth, Laura Sirina, Louisa Seldon and Ellen Lee to eighteen years of age respectively be free and emancipated to all intents and purposes and at liberty to pursue such occupations as they shall elect to follow and to enjoy all such rights and immunities, privileges, and benefits which they would have been entitled to in as full free and perfect a manner as they would have done have they have born free and the said William Armistead for him self and for his heirs so doth covenant and agree with the said Frances Lewis and with the said Edwin Frances, Mary Elizabeth, Laura Sirina, Louisa Seldon and Ellen Lee that he will forever warrant and defend their and each of their rights titles and claims to emancipation and liberty under the restricting herein before stated and the persons aforesaid and in like manner shall either the said Mary Elizabeth, Laura Sirina, Louisa Seldon and Ellen Lee before they respectively arrive at the ages of eighteen years of age have a child or children then such child or children to be free and emancipated from the birth of such child or children and to possess and enjoy all such rights privileges and immunity to which they would have been entitled had they been born free and the said William Armistead doth hereby covenant and agree to and with the said Edwin Frances, Mary Elizabeth, the said Laura Sirina, Louisa Solden and Ellen Lee that on the event of his the said William Armistead’s death before they respectively arrive at the ages at which they are to have and enjoy all the rights of free persons that, from and after the death of the said William Armistead they shall be forever free and emancipated and from the period of that event have and enjoy all the rights privileges and immunities of free persons in a full perfect and complete manner them and their descendants forever to all intents and purposes, and the said William Armistead his heirs, Executors, Administrators do will at any time enter into such other and further covenants and conveyances and will or may become necessary to complete the title or titles of the said persons to liberty at the times herein before set forth.
