Wills Book 16, Pgs 70-71
In the name of God Amen I Sarah Jones of the county of Bedford and state of Virginia do hereby
make this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say
Item 1st that my just debts and funeral expenses be first paid
Item 2nd I give Adeline Lee my sideboard
Item 3rd In consideration of honesty and fidelity I emancipate my negro man slave called
Grayson
Item 4th I give my daughter Nancy Clayton the following named slaves Edmond Malinda Sam
and John
Item 5th I give my three sons Henry Jones William C Jones and John Jones and to my two grand
daughters Mary Cofer Amanda Lee they both together claiming as one child’s part all the rest of
my personal estate
Item 6th I wish my old and infirm slaves Becky and Rhoda to be supported comfortably by my
executors and for that same purpose wish them to set a grant or a sum of money out of my estate
the interest of which I will be sufficient and after the death of the said slaves the principle sum
with the interest which may be remaining (if any) to be paid to my children and two
grandchildren Mary Cofer and Amanda Lee.
Item 7th After the above named legacys and all made my wishing desire is that all the rest of the
estate personal or what nature or kind soever it may be not herein before particularly disposed of
I desire may be equally divided among my three sons Henry Jones William C Jones and John
Jones my daughter Nancy Clayton and my two granddaughters Mary Cofer and Amanda Lee
they both claiming as one child And lastly I do hereby constitute an appoint my son Henry Jones
William C Jones and John Jones executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all
others or former will or testaments by me heretofor made in witness whereof I hereunto set my
hand and affixed my seal this 12th day of November 1850

At a court held for Bedford County at the courthouse on the 28th day of annuary 1856 this
writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Sarah Jones deceased was produced in
court for proof and it appearing to the court that William C. Leftwich one of the subscribing
witnesses to said will is dead his handwriting was proved by the oath of Samuel Quareles and the
said will is continued for further proof and the court doth appoint Lafayette Lee curator of the
estate of the said Sarah Jones until the said will is admitted to record or rejected and thereupon
the said Lafayette Lee together with William Lee mark Andrews and James G Lee his securities
entered into and acknowledged bond in the penalty of seventy five thousand dollars conditioned
according to law. and thereafter too wit at a court held for said county at the courthouse the 29th
day of January 1856 this writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Sarah Jones
deceased was again produced in court and further proved according to law by the oath of James
S Mitchell a subscribing witness there too and the said writing was ordered to be recorded as the
last will and testament of the said Sarah Jones deceased and it is ordered that the order made on
yesterday appointing Lafayette Lee curator of the estate of they said Sarah Jones deceased be set
aside and the executors in said will named having refused to qualify and take I on themselves
the bother of the execution of said will on the motion of Lafayette Lee who made oath and
together with Garnett Lee his security entered into and acknowledged bond in the penalty of
seventy five dollars conditioned according to law certificate was granted him for obtaining letters
of administration with the will annexed of the estate of the said Sarah Jones deceased in due
form
