Whereas John Cheatwood late of the county of Bedford and State of Virginia by his last will and
testament bequeathed certain of his slaves to his sister Alice Cheatwood during her life and after
her death thereby declared that they should be free. Which said last will and testament has been
duly admitted probate and is of record in the clerk’s office of the county court of Bedford. And
whereas the said Alice Cheatwood has since died and rights to their freedom has arrived to said
slaves. Now this deed witnesseth that I Hiram Cheatwood executor of the said John Cheatwood
in furtherance of said last will and testament hereby append to the legacy of freedom bequeathed
to two of the said slaves to wit Spencer and Bird
Witness the following signatures and seal this the 28th day of Nov 1853

of John Cheatwood decd.
In the clerks office of Bedford County November 28th 1853 this deed of emancipation from
Hiram Cheatwood executor of John Cheatwood decd. to Spencer and Bird late slaves of said
decedent was produced and said office acknowledged by the said Hiram Cheatwood and
admitted to record.
