Know all men by these presents that I John Callaway of Bedford County have manumitted
emancipated and set free and by these presents do manumit emancipate and set free, and by these
presents do manumit emancipate and set free a negro man slave named Thomas, and sometimes
called Thomas Mullen, and I hereby declare him the said Thomas to be entirely liberated from
slavery, and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person with which it is my power to
vest him. In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal the 3rd day of July 1849.
