In the name of God Amen, I Alexander Irvine of the County of Bedford and the State of Virginia
being diseased and enfeebled in body, but of sound mind and memory do ordain and establish
this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills and testaments henceforth made
and published by me, after the following manner this is to say Ist I desire that all my just debts
and necessary expenses be paid, 2nd it is my desire that all my slaves be set free at my death, and
to avoid there being turned out suddenly into the world and that without a house I wish these to
be kept upon my land where they now are and provided for by my executors in as humane and
comfortable manner too work under their direction for twelve months in making a crop for the
benefit of my estate at the appreciation of which time they are to be discharged from labor and
thence are to be forever free from bondage, it is my wish that these slaves to whom I have thus
given their freedom and whose names are Rheuben, Rhoda and her children, to wit William,
Henry, James, Ambrose, Wiatt, and Mary remain always in the Commonwealth of Virginia and I
request my executors too make a respectful request to the county court of Bedford to that effect
should this request not be complied with it is my wish that when they have to leave the state,
they be paid by my executors the sums of money severally affixed to their names that is to say to
Rheuben the sum of fifty dollars to William the sum of fifty dollars, to Rhoda the sum of one
hundred fifty dollars and also my walnut beadstead, one feather bed, two sheets 1 wool and one
linen, 2 striped blankets, 1 makenaw, 1 new dark coverlet, one pillow and one bolster, to Henry
the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, to James one hundred dollars, to Ambrose one hundred
dollars, to Wiatt three hundred dollars and to Mary one hundred dollars of the above request to
the county court of Bedford is complied with and the above negroes are permitted to remain in
the Commonwealth It is still my wish that the severally be paid the above sums of money and
that they receive the same when they have to quit my land and there home and it is my wish that
Rhoda be privilege to receive for all of them except William and Ruben- Thirdly, I give and
bequeath my land on which I now live with all of its appurtenances to my two brothers George
M Irvine and John Irvine and my sister Elizabeth Deardoff in equal proportions to thence and
their heirs forever. I also give to them and also in equal proportions thereof

to be made by the negroes during their stay upon this land as their home as above stated, and
also to them in equal proportions every kind of stock except a horse and a cow and calf hereafter
to be mentioned and all plantation utensils V V Fourthly I give to my sister Elizabeth Deardoff
besides her interest in the above clause the sum of five hundred dollars- Fifthly I give to my two
brothers George M Irvine and John Irvine to each the sum of two hundred seventy five dollarssixthly I give to my friends a Lodowick McDaniel Esquire and Frederick Anspaugh Esquire to
each the sum of one hundred dollars as a token of my regard and as an acknowledgment of their
great kindness to me Seventhly I give to my friend Daniel Tompkins my brown horse Rocker to
be received by him as soon as my slaves have finished the crop hearin before mentioned,
Eighthly I give to my friend Christopher Morgan Esquire my brown spotted cow and a black
yearling cost also to be received by him as above stated in regard to the horse- ninthly I wish it
understood that I have now on hand the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars in cash one bond on
Preston V Leftwich for fifteen hundred dollars and one on McLeave Board and Morgan for five
hundred dollars and that these several sums and the interest on the bonds be made to pay the
several bequeaths hearing before mentioned and to the surplus remaining together any other
residue of my estate be equally divided among my two brothers and sisters and affirm any
expected causes there should be a deficiency that my brother and sister make it up and that the
share thereof they pay be in proportion to the dignity of their specific bequeaths severally and
lastly I do hereby appoint Loderwick McDaniel and Frederick Anspaugh my executors of this
my last will and testament as witness my hand and seal this 13th day of February 1843.

This last will and testament of Alexander Irvine deceased was produced in court proven by the
oath of Thomas Morgan and John Morgan subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be
recorded.
