In pursuance of the provisions of the last will and testament of Thomas Whittington jr. deceased
of which I was appointed and have qualified as the executor and in conformity with a decree of
the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery for the County of Bedford made on the 8th day
of October 1841. I do hereby appoint to the legacy of freedom bequeathed in said last will and
testament to the following persons of colour (late slaves of said decedent but in virtue of the said
will and decree and of these presents now entitled to their freedom, namely, Pompey, Henry,
Nat, Julius, Big Dick, Little Dick, Aaron, little Courtney, Alick, David and Albert (men)
Andrew, Nelson, Breckenridge, Arthur, Sam, Morris, Jordan, Squire, William, Hiram, little Nat,
Lawson, Crawford, Solomon, Henry, Patrick, Lorenzo, Charles, George, Dick, William (infant),
(Boys) Polly, Clara, Rachel, Maria, Melinda, Caroline, Nelly, Juno, Milly, Mary, Lena (women).
Ann, Editha, Sally, Lucey, Loisa, Betty, Juliet, Fenton, Lucinda, Frances, Selina, Judy, Mary,
Eliza, Sally, Loverta, Maria, Amanda, and Maria Roseline (Girls) witness my hand and seal this
23rd day of October 1841.

At a court held for Bedford County in the 25th day of October 1841. This deed of emancipation
from William Oglesby executor of Thomas Whittington junior deceased to Pompey and others
was produced in court, proved by the oath of William T Yancey and William C Irvine two of the
subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
