Know all men buy these presents that I Samuel Phillips of the County of Bedford in the State of
Virginia for divine good causes and caused motions me thereunto moving have and by these
presents do manumit , liberate and forever set free from the bonds of slavery my negro woman
slave named Becky and I do by these presents for myself my heirs, executors, and administrators
forever remiss, release and grant all claiming of property in and to the said Becky as a slave
from this date of these presents henceforth and forever.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal the first day of
November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty-six.

This deed of emancipation from Samuel Phillips to his negro woman slave Becky was produced
in office acknowledged by said Phillips and admitted to record.
