In the name of God Amen I Thomas Arthur of Bedford County Virginia being weak in body and
sound and purified memory to make this my last will and testament as follows to wit first
committing my soul to God my body to be decently buried Item I lend to my beloved wife during
her widowhood one third part of my estate except the land my son John now lives on and at his
marriage and increase I give the said third part to be equally divided among all my children Item
I give to my son John the land and plantation whereto he now lives on Ammons Branch
combining one hundred acres to him and his heirs forever Item I give all of my other lands to be
equally divided among my other children at my death Item I give all of my other estate to be
equally divided among all my children in manner and form as follows viz it is my will and desire
that my negro boy called John King be set free at twenty one years of age and will them to
remain with my wife for her use if she should die before he is twenty one years old it is my will
and desire that he be hired out from year to year until the age for the list price that can be got
from such persons as shall be bound to use him with all the profits arriving from the hire of him
to be equally divided among all my children every year in as soon as collected and whereas my
Married children have had some part of my estate Viz. my son William has had the value of two
pounds my daughter Priscilla 4 pounds and 3 shillings my son John 4 pounds my daughter Nancy
two pounds my son Harrison one pound ten shillings my daughter Fanny four pounds my son
Joel two pounds my daughter Molly two pounds and my daughter Sally three pounds ten
shillings all of which it is my will shall be valued with the rest of my personal estate and an equal
division from first to last of the whole to be made among all my children NB my son Steven has
also had fifteen dollars and my son Benjamin twenty dollars of my estate award them equal parts
and lastly I constitute as affiant right in appoint my son Thomas Arthur and my son in law John
West to be executors of this last my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills I do
now declare this and no other to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I have
hereunto set my hand and seal this seventh day of February one thousand seven hundred and
ninety nine.

I Thomas Arthur Bedford County being weak in body but sound mind do make the following
addition and alteration to my last will annexed to this Viz is the part of my estate which I will to
my son Wm Arthur I now give to his son William my grandson and his heirs forever I also give
to my wife the use and service of the negro woman called Molly until the owner of her John

Anthony Junr. shall repay the money to redeem her according to contract which is seventy
pounds, In witness of the above I hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of December 1806.

At a court held for Bedford County at the Courthouse the 24th day of January 1820 this last will
and testament of Thomas Arthur decd. was proven by the oath of John Murphy Jr. what also by
the said John Murphy Jr has the handwriting of J Murphy a witness and who is dead and the
codicil proved by Jacob Krantz of Lynchburg witness and ordered to be recorded and on the
motion of John West the Exer. therein named who made oath and gave bond and security
according to law certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.
