In the records of Somerset County, it is contained as following viz
Know all men by these presents that I James Ward of Somerset County do hereby emancipate
and set free according to the laws of Maryland a negro man named John aged about twenty one
years which said liberation takes place from the date hereof so stated henceforth the said negro
man John is set at free liberty freedom from me Given under my hand this twenty second day of
September in the year of our Lord God seventeen hundred ninety five

Sealed and delivered in the presence of James B Smith John Hale
September the 22nd day Anno Domi 1795 came James Ward before me the subscriber and did
acknowledge the above instrument of writing to be his act and deed and the negro man John
therein mentioned to be a freeman according to the instrument of meaning hereof.

September the twenty second day Anno Domi seventeen hundred ninety five there was delivered
hereunto me the subscriber the foregoing Deed of Manumission is ordered to be recorded among
the records of Somerset County which said deed of manumission together with the
acknowledgement thereof thereto endorsed accordingly recorded Liber K Folio 2379238 for Wm
Dove Clk

I hereby certify unto once whom witness or any whom may consider that the foregoing is a true
copy taken from Liber K Folio 2379238 have of the records of emancipation remaining in my
office. In testimony whereof I have set my hand and affixed the seal of my office this 10th day of
April Anno Domi 1798.

At a court held for Bedford County the 28th day of September 1801 the instruments of writing
emancipating John the property of James Ward of the state of Maryland was subscribed in court
under the hand of Wm. Dove clerk of Somerset County with the seal of said county thereto
affixed which is ordered to be recorded
