Merchant to Emancipate Polly
Know all men by these presents that I Mathew Merchant of the County of Bedford & State of Virginia having purchased a certain Negro woman named Polly from Charles Gwatkins of the County & State aforesaid, the Bill of Sale given from the said Gwatkins to the said Mathew Merchant being, now recorded in the worshipful Court of Bedford for the purchase aforesaid I the said Mathew Merchant do by these presents for good cause & Considerations to me appertaining forever quit claims set free & liberate the said Polly purchased of Charles Gwatkins foresaid, together with all her future increase free from the challenge demand or demands of myself of any persons or persons whatsoever In testimony whereof I have here unto set my hand & affixed my seal this the twenty fifth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety nine Mathew Merchant (his mark) {LS} [seal]

At a court held for Bedford County the 25th day of February 1799 this instrument of writing was acknowledged by Mathew Merchant pursely thereto & addressed to be recorded.
