Davis to Instrument writing Merchant
Know all men by these presents that I Nicholas Davis of Bedford County and of pure love and Christian reguard that I have for Mathew Marchant for his good behavior to me but also for and in Consideration of the sum of Five Shillings Current Money of Virginia to in hand paid by Mathew Marchant I do hereby free the said Mathew Marchant shall be free from being in a State of Slavery from me my heirs or any other person or persons, and I beg of the Worshipal Court of Bedford County to have this recorded in the Records of Bedford in such a manner that the said Mathew Marchant shall be be free as any Man in the of Virginia In witness ~ hereof I presents have set my hand & seal this tenth day of December one thousand seven hundred and ninety three. At a court held for Bedford County the 23rd day of December 1793~ This Instrument of writing was pressed by the Oath of Joseph Slaughter & Martin King Jun Witnesses whose name are there unto subscribed & ordered to be recorded.
