Deed Book 9, Pg 145 At a court held for Bedford County the 24th day of December 1792 This emancipation together with a certificate of the emancipation thereof was returned to court and order to be recorded. Teste, Jo Steptoe CBC I John Murphy of Bedford County in the state of Virginia upon mature deliberation being fully concerned of the impropriety of slavery do hereby set free emancipate and set free from bondage all my negro slaves, Which are and have been in my possession and servitude within the five years last past: Of the names and ages as follows: viz one man named Tom aged about forty five years which said negro I set free about five years past but have hereto omitted recording the same, Baker, About thirty four years of age, one negro woman named Joan about thirty six years of age one negro woman named Hannah about thirty years of age and one negro woman named Betty about thirty years of age And I do for myself my heirs executors and administrators release unto the said negroes all claims whatsoever as they As to them persons and their property which they have, shall or may hereafter acquire, hereby declaring the said negroes absolutely free without interruption from me or any person claiming under me and I moreover emancipate free from slavery the said four young negroes hereafter named to wit the sons and daughters named and at times hereafter mentioned respectively. VIZ my negro boy named Daniel about fourteen years of age shall be and I do hereby declare him to be free in seven years from the tenth day of April last past, also mulatto girl named Nanny aged about eleven years I hereby declare to be free in nine years from the day of June last past and my negro boy Andrew aged about eight years to be free in thirteen years from the 11th day of April last past also my negro or mulatto boy named Milton about five years of age to be free on fifteen years from the 29th day of August last past reserving to myself my heirs the case instruction and service of the form last mentioned young Negros till the expiration of the times above mentioned at which time I hereby again declare them all to be entirely free from me and all persons claiming under me in witness where of I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty fourth day of September one thousand seven hundred and ninety two.
