Know all men by these presents that I Hamilton Boyd of the City of Lynchburg from motives
of benevolence have emancipated and set free from slavery and do hereby manumit
and set free from slavery my negro man Joe sometimes called Joe Johnson sometimes
called Joseph Johnson, sometimes called Joseph James Johnson and I do hereby give
grant and release unto the said Joe sometimes called of above stated, all my right title and
claim of in and to his [illegible] labour and services and of in and to all the estate and property which
he may hereafter acquire or obtain.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of August of
the year One thousand Eight hundred and fifty Eight. H Boyd (Seal)
Corporations of Lynchburg to wit
I Jno [John] H. Bailey a Justice of the Peace in
the Corporation aforesaid in the State of Virginia
do certify that Hamilton Boyd whose name is
signed to the writing above bearing date the
16th day of August 1858 has acknowledged
the same before me in the Corporation aforesaid
