Text of Freedom Document

I, Samuel Garland Jr, sole heir and devisee of the late Maurice H. Garland decd. of the City of Lynchburg, for
and in consideration of the sum of eight hundred dollars paid to me, the receipt whereof is hereby
acknowledged, do for myself, my heirs, executors and administrators, emancipate, set free and forever quit
claim to the services of a negro man slave named Thomas, formerly belonging to the estate of my said
deceased father and devised to me by his last will and testament, hereby establishing the freedom of the said
Thomas, from this day henceforth and forever. Given under my hand and seal, this seventh day of January
1853.

This day personally appeared before me a Justice of the peace, in and for the said City, Samuel Garland Jr,
whose name is signed to the foregoing deed of emancipation, bearing date the 7th day of January 1853, who
acknowledged the same in due form. Given under my hand this 8th day of January 1853.

I, Caroline M. Garland, widow and relict of Maurice H. Garland decd., being entitled under his will to make
selection of any five slaves belonging to his estate, do hereby renounce all claim to the slave Thomas by virtue
of such right, or any other right whatsoever, and hereby sanction and approve the said slave's emancipation.
Given under my hand and seal, this seventh day of January 1853.

This day personally appeared before me a Justice of the peace in and for the said City, Caroline M. Garland
whose name is signed to the deed next above written, bearing date upon the 7th day of January 1853, who acknowledged the same, to be her act and deed. Given under my
hand this 11th day of January 1853.

presented with certificates of acknowledgement endorsed and admitted to record.
