Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents that whereas John
Miller, deced [deceased], late of the Town of Lynchburg, did by his last
Will and Testament, which is duly of Record in the Hustings
Court for the Corporation of Lynchburg, emancipate and set free, a certain female Slave, named Lucy, aged
about years. And whereas I Samuel Miller
have alone qualified as the executor of said John
Miller, deced. under the will aforesaid. And this
Indenture witnesseth that, I, Samuel Miller, do
hereby, as executor aforesaid, give my free assent to
the freedom and emancipation of said slave Lucy.
And by these presents the said female slave Lucy,
is forever emancipated and set free.
Given under my hand and seal this 1st day of February 1843.
Samuel Miller (Seal) Executor of John Miller deced.
Signed Sealed and delivered in the presence of D. Rodes. J. Benagh Jr.
Corporation of Lynchburg, to wit:
We and Justices
of the peace in and for said Corporation and State of Virginia,
do hereby certify that, Samuel Miller, executor
of John Miller deced, a party to a certain Deed of
emancipation, bearing date the 1st day of February
1843. and hereto annexed, personally appeared before
us in our corporation aforesaid, and acknowledged
the same to be his act and Deed, and desired us to
certify the said acknowledgment to the Clerk of
the Hustings Court for the Corporation of Lynchburg
in order that the said Deed may be recorded.
Given under our hands and seals this day of 1843.

[3? 5?] day of April 1823. This deed of emancipation from Saml. Miller Exor of John
Miller Decd to Lucy was proved in open Court by the oaths of D Rodes and Jas Benagh Jr and ordered to be
recorded.
