Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents, that I, Samuel Miller of the Town of Lynchburg, and State of Virginia, have
liberated, released, emancipated, and set free, and by these presents do hereby fully liberate, release,
emancipate, and set free. My Negro woman slave named Rose, aged about twenty seven years, and her two
children, one a girl by the name of Virginia, aged about ten years, and the other a boy by the name of Richard,
about seven years of age; which said slaves, with the future increase of the females, I do hereby declare to be
free, and intirely released, and emancipated from all kind of servitude or slavery. And I do further by these
presents, covenant and bind my self my heirs &c. To warrant and forever defend the right of freedom hereby
given the slaves aforesaid, free from the existing claim, or claims of all persons whomsoever. In testimony
whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 5th day of October in the year of Our Lord, One
