Know all men by these presents that I Ammon Hancock of
the Town of Lynchburg and State of Virginia for and in consideration
of the belief that all mankind are by nature equally free
from involuntary servitude and that it is exercising a power
given by Law rather than enjoying a right to hold in slavery
any human being do by these presents forever liberate set free
and emancipate the following slaves to wit Jane and her
four children Viz Wesley, Eliza, Archer, and William, and
the children or increase of the females thereof forever and do by
these presents for myself my heirs executors and administrators
forever quit claim to the services of the aforesaid five
slaves and their descendants and entirely liberate them from
all sorts of servitude to myself my heirs executors and administrators
renouncing all claim right little or demand that
I may have or that my heirs executors or administrators
might have over the aforesaid slaves or either of them In
testamony [testimony] whereof I herewith set my hand and affix
my seal this twenty fourth day of January 1823

At a Court of Hustings cond [continued] & held for the corporation of
Lynchburg at the Court House on Tuesday the 4th day of
March 1823. This deed of Emancipation from Ammon
Hancock to Jane & her children was this day acknowledged
in open Court by sd. [said] Hancock & ordered to be recorded.
