I William Davis of the Town of Lynchburg
from mature & deliberate consideration, and the
conviction of my own mind, being fully persuaded that
freedom is the natural right of all mankind, and
that no Law Morral [Moral] or Divine has given me a right
to, or property in the persons of any of my fellow
creatures & being desirous to fulfil [fulfill] the injunction of
our Lord & Saviour [Savior] Jesus Christ by doing unto others
as I would be done by, do therefore declare that having
in my possession as the heir at Law of my son Benjamin Davis, Deceased,
four black people, (To Wit,
Sukey Hodges & her three children, namely, Bob, Isaac
& Jordan, do for myself my Heirs Executors & administrators
hereby release unto the said Sukey Hodges aged about Twenty five years all my right
Interest & claim whatsover [whatsoever] to her person, or to any Estate
she may acquire from this time, and also unto the
aforesaid children, (Bob aged about five years, Isaac three years & Jordan an infant about
eight months old) all my right Interest & claim or
pretintions of claim as to their persons, or to any Estate
they may acquire after they shall arrive to the age of
twenty one years.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand &
seal this the 29th day of the 1st month 1819.

The within deed of emancipation from
William Davis to Sucky Hodges, emancipating her and her
three children was this day acknowledged by the said William
Davis and admitted to record.
