To all whom these presents may concern. Be it known that
I Hamlin Epes of the town of Lynchburg, State of Virginia,
for and in consideration of the faithful manner in which
my slave Letty hath heretofore demeaned herself and for
other reasons Thereunto moving me, do by these presents forever
emancipate and set free the aforesaid negro woman named
Letty and all her future increase free from the claim or
claims of myself, my heirs, executors or admrs [administrators] and free from
The claim of all persons whomsoever -- Upon this special
condition nevertheless that the said Letty and her increase
render unto me, my heirs or assigns, manual & bodily service
untill [until] the 25th day of December One Thousand eight hundred
and twenty five -- after which time I do (as aforesaid) warrant
and forever defend unto the said Letty and her increase
full and perfect freedom and liberty free from the claim
of all persons whomsoever -- In Witness whereof I
hereunto set my hand and seal at Lynchburg in the
State aforesaid This 17th day of October 1817.
