I Adam Hughes free man of colour of the county of
Campbell, and State of Virginia having many years ago
taken Jane a woman of colour then the slave of Anderson
Pride, according to the usuages of people of colour to be my
wife & have ever since lived with with her as man and wife
and she now being far advanced in years, I have purchased
her from the said Anderson Pride and as evidence
Thereof I hold his bill of sale dated the 24th of December 1838
and do by these presents make this my last will & Testament
devising to her all my personal property (having no real)
to wit one horse and all my crops & household furniture
and also bequeath and devise to her, her liberty, and direct
next immediately after my decease, this my last will and
Testament be admitted to record in the county court of Campbell
and that thereon she be entitled to letters or a Deed of emancipation
- and that she remove to the County of Amelia to
live with John Pride who has promised me to take care of
her and what effects she may have during her life time
and revoking all other wills and Testaments - do declare
this my only will & Testament . In testimony whereof I hereby
subscribe my name and affix my seal this the Eighth
day of May in the year 1841.

At a Court held for Campbell County on the 14th day of June 1847 the foregoing last will and testament of
Adam Hughes a free man of colour was presented in Court proven by the oaths of Allen G Clay and John C
Johnson two of the subscribing witnesses thereto subscribed and ordered to be recorded. Teste Geo. W.
