I Charles Smith of Campbell County and State of Virginia from mature deliberate consideration
and the conviction of my own mind, being fully persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all
mankind, and that no law moral or divine has given me a right to a property in the person of my
fellow creatures, and being desirous to fulfill the injunction of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ
by doing to others as I would be done by. Do therefore declare that having under my care four
Negroes that are by law now in a state of slavery (viz Rose a woman aged about 25 years, Frank
aged about 15 years, Matt about 3 ½ years, Reuben a boy about 1 ½ years – I do for myself and
any Heirs Executors and Administrators hereby release unto the said Rose, Frank, Matt and
Reuben, at the several Dates following (viz, Rose on New years Day 1796- Frank the 1st day of
June 1801- Matt the 31 January 1815- Reuben the 29th January 1815 all my right Interest claim
or pretention of claim whatsoever as to their persons or any estate they may acquire after arriving
to the period above mentioned without any interruption from me. In witness whereof I have
hereunto set my hand and seal this 3rd Day of September 1795

At a Court held for Campbell County October 1st 1795
The within manumission was proved by the solemn affirmation of Micajah Davis and Benjamin
Butterworth Witnesses thereto subscribed of Ordered to be recorded.
