Text of Freedom Document
I Thomas D. Ripley of Isle of Wight County, and State of Virginia,
Make my will as follows. I appoint my friend Archibald Atkinson my
Executor. I liberate, emancipate and set free my servant woman Jinny, and
all her children now born or to be born after this will is executed, to wit:
Claudius, Cornelius, Mary, William & Fanny and the future increase of
said Jinny and the other females born in my life or afterward, intending
that all her children as well as such as she may have in 9 months thereafter
shall be free. I give to said Jinny five hundred Dollars to defray her expenses
and those of her children to some free State of her choice. And I desire
my Executor to pay her the same as soon after my death, as he can. I give
said Jinny 2 Beds and bedstead & furniture of first choice. I liberate, emancipate
and set free my servant girl Eliza, daughter of Amanda. and desire
that Eliza may go with Jinny who is appointed trustee for her & to receive
and to manage her estate. I request my Executor to pay to Jinny for Eliza
One hundred dollars to defray her expenses to some free state, & what may
remain of that sum over said expenses, the said Jinny is to pay to Eliza as
she may require. I direct my Executor to sell publickly or privately as soon
as he pleases, the whole of my estate not hereafter given away; the money
arising therefrom, I give as follows. I give to Jinny Two hundred dollars,
to be paid her annually for five years, for the support and maintenance of all
her children now living for that period. I give to said Jinny, One hundred and
fifty dollars annually, for the support and maintenance of her 3 youngest
children untill each shall attain the age of 21 years. at which time, I mean
when the youngest of her children now living shall attain the age of 21 years,
the balance of the proceeds of my estate sold & remaining in the hands of my
Executor is to be divided in equal shares between the children of the said Jinny
now born or to be born in nine months after my death_ that may be living at
that event. Should all the children of Jinny who are now living or born in 9 months
after my death, die before the said Jinny, then_ and in that event, I give what
is intended for them on their mothers death, to go as follows, One half to said
Jinny & the other half to said Eliza, & their Heirs forever, Given under my
hand and seal this 5th May 1854. having had this paper read to me, & requested
the witnesses to sign in my presence_ Teste.

Codicil to the foregoing Will, made this 15th of May 1854. in further explanation
I Thos D Ripley order and will, that my executor instead of keeping in his
hands my estate not specifically devised or bequeathed, untill Jinnys youngest
child arive to the age of 21. years, he shall, upon my death divid this estate
so left in his hand, after paying the legacies and annuities, into equal shares,
between Jinny and all the children then living, or born in 9 months afterward,
paying to Jinny her share, and to each of the children his or her respective
share as he or she may arive to the age of 21. years of age, or to his or her appointed
guardian, and I appoint ^him^ guardian of the infant children. _ Given under
my hand & seal this 15th of May 1854. all the keys & things in Cupboard to be giv'n to Kitty
and not sold. Interlineation made before signed

In Isle of Wight County Court January 1st 1855.
A paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Thomas D Ripley
dated the 5th day of May 1854, and the codicil thereto dated the 15th day of May
1854. was presented in Court by Archibald Atkinson the executor named in
said will, and proved by the oaths of John A. Purdie and E.S.F. Willis two of the
witnesses to said will and codicil & ordered to be recorded; And on the motion of the
said Archibald Atkinson the said executor who made oath and with Joseph
A. Atkinson and N. P. Young his securities entered into and acknowledged
a bond in the penalty of $6000. with condition according to law,
certificate is granted him for obtaining a probat of said will in due form of law.
