Know all men by these presents that I Eliza W. Cocke of the town of
Smithfield in the County of Isle of Wight in the State of Virginia from
motives of benevolence have manumitted and set free from slavery
my negro man David Johnston aged about thirty two years. And I do
give - grant and release unto the said David Johnston all my right - title
and claim of in & to his person labour and services, and to all the estate
and property to which he may hereafter acquire or obtain, and do endow
him with all the privileges and immunities which I have the power to
bestow. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this
fifth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred
and fifty seven.

I George R. Atkinson a Notary Publick for the County aforesaid in the
State of Virginia, do certify that Eliza W. Cocke whose name is signed to
the writing above bearing datae on the 5th day of January 1857 has acknowle-
dged the same before me in my cuonty aforesaid. Given under my hand this
5th day of January 1857.
