Know all men by these presents that I Elizabeth W. Cocke of the County
of Isle of Wight have emancipated, manumitted & set free, and by these
presents do manumit, emancipate and set free a negro man slave name
Lewis sometimes called Lewis Johnson, and I do hereby declare him the
said Lewis to be entirely liberated from slavery and entitled to all the rights
and privileges of a free person, with which it is in my power to invest
him. The said Lewis hereby emancipated is a man of dark complexion about
five feet ten inches high, and will be about thirty three years of age on
the first day of September next. Given under my hand this 30th day of
December 1849.

In Isle of Wight County Court Jany 7th 1850 the foregoing
deed was proved by the oaths of Chs B. Hayden and Sampson White
the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
