In the name of God Amen. I John H Purdie of the Town of Smithfield
in the County of Isle of Wight, in the State of Virginia, being sound in mind
but very infirm and feeble in health and strength, do make and publish this
my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say,
In the first place, after the payment of my just debts, I give and bequeath
to my son John R. Purdie all my Books & papers, medicines, instruments,
and apparatus of all kinds, my mahogany secretary and book case, the
Portraits of my Father and Mother, my Gold watch, Clock, purchased of
Addison, fourteen mahogany chairs, the drawing Room Pictures, and the Bed
Stead Bed and Matress which I have always slept on, to him and his heirs
forever
Secondly, I give and bequeath to my daughter Martha M. Purdie my negro
woman Tenor, the Bed Stead called the [Botteterant?] bed stead, bed and matress,

the piano and all my music books and music, my Gold miniature, and
the profile of my first wife, to her and her heirs forever -
Thirdly, I give and bequeath to my daughter Anna M M Purdie my negro
girl Fanny the daughter of Tenor, the carved mahogany bedstead which
was brought from [?Aill's Terry?] North Carolina, with the bed usually
attached to it, my mahogany press, a painting in water colours with
a gilt frame representing "cottages at the foot of Mount Vesuvius" and
the Profiles of myself and wife Dorethea Chain taken in Edinburgh, to her
and her heirs forever
Fourthly, I give and bequeath to my Gran daughter Nancy Moore Purdie the
daughter of my son George W. Purdie, my Black walnut Desk and Book case,
my old eight day clock, and one of the Porcelain miniature likenesses of Doct'r
Benjamin Franklin to her and heirs forever -
Fifthly, I give and bequeath to my Grand Daughter Nancy [?Maur?] Purdie
the Daughter of son George W. Purdie, one Feather Bed to her and her heirs
forever.
Sixthly, I give and bequeath to my son John R Purdie, all my ship
furniture of every description, Paines Patent Medice_Electrical machine
and apparatus, my old painting representing a Scotch Penny wedding,
one porcelain miniature likeness of Doct'r Benjamin Franklin the American
Patriot and Philsopher, and my Gold sleeve Buttons, to him and his
heirs forever -
Seventhly, I do hereby emancipate and set free from Bondage my Mulatto
woman Louisa, the daughter of Molly who is the property of Nath'l Young's
heirs, and in as much as I have hired to serve my countrymen faithfully
in several capacities, I make this my first request of the court of my
native county, that they will permit the said woman Louisa to remain
in the Commonwealth - It is my serious belief that she labours under
an organic disease, which totally incapacitates her from breeding -
Eightly, All the Rest of my estate of what nature or kind soever, I give and
bequeath to my son John R. Purdie, in consideration of, and as a
compensation for, the appropration which he has heretofore in many
instances made of his own individual funds towards the payment
and satisfaction of my debts - and I request him my son John
R. Purdie to furnish his sisters Martha and Anna, and his Brother
George and Family, the necessities of life, as long as he is able to
provide them.
And lastly, I hereby constitute and appoint my son John R. Purdie
my whole and sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament,
hereby revoking all former Wills or Testaments by me heretofore
made - And it is my last request of the Court that they will not require of
my Executor herein appointed any security for the faithful performance
of the duties assigned him. In Witness whereof, I have

hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 21st day of May
in the year of our Lord 1845 -

The foregoing last will and testament of John H. Purdie dec'd was presented in Court by Jno. R. Purdie the executor therein
named and proved by the oaths of W.T. Jordan and
Reuben Butler two of the witnesses thereto and ordered
to be recorded.
