Whereas Franklin Slaughter did by deed bearing date the 28th
day of April 1856, convey to Peter Goolrick, Hay B. Hoomes and Wm. S. Barton
a certain Slave man named Washington Whitten, a bright mulatto, aged
about thirty four years; upon Trust, that upon the payment of five dollars,
being the balance of the purchase money of the said Slave, due to the said
Franklin Slaughter, to the said Trustees or any one of them, then the said
Trustees, any one or more of whom may act, shall execute to the said Wash=
ington Whittner, a deed of Manumission and release from Slavery of the
said Washington Whittner. And Whereas the said sum of Five dollars
has been fully paid; Now know all men by these presents that we
Peter Goolrick and Hay B. Hoomes, two of the Trustees aforesaid, for and
inconsideration of the sum of Five dollars, paid the receipt of which is
hereby acknowledged, have manumitted, emancipated and set free, and
by these presents, do manumit, emancipate and set free the said Wash=
=ington Whitten, and we do declare him the said Washington Whitten
to be entirely liberated from Slavery, and entitled to all the rights and
privileges of a free person, with which it is in our power to vest him.
In Testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our hands and
affixed our Seals this 5th day of August 1862.
