Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents, that I, James Peyton of the
County of Spotsylvania, in the State of Virginia, have manumitted, eman=
=cipated and set free, and by these presents, do manumit, emancipate and
set free my negro Slaves Patsy Taliaferro and her two Children Rozetta and
Thomas, also my negro Slaves Judy Sanders and Maurice Sanders; and I
hereby declare them the said Patsy, Rozetta, Thomas, Judy & Maurice, to be en=
=tirely liberated from Slavery, and entitled to all the rights and privileges of
free persons, with which it is in my power to vest them. The Negroes hereby
emancipated are of the following ages, Viz; Patsy Taliaferro about forty years
of age, Rosetta about 8 years of age; Thomas about 7 years of age, Judy Sanders
about 30 years of age, & Maurice Sanders about 5 years of age.
Witness the following signature and Seal this 1" day of January 1861

whose name is signed to the writing hereto annexed, bearing date on the 1" day
of January 1861, has acknowledged the same before me, in my Corporation afore=
said--Given under my hand this 15" day of April 1861
