Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents, that I, James Peyton of the County of
Spotsylvania, in the State of Virginia, have manumitted, emancipated and set
free, and by these presents, do manumit, emancipate and set free, my negro slaves,
Nancy, Charles Austin and William Henry, and I hereby declare them the said
Nancy, Charles Austin & William Henry, to be entirely liberated from slavery, and en=
=titled to all the rights and privileges of free persons, with which it is in my power
to vest them; the negroes hereby emancipated, are of the following ages, Viz;
Nancy about thirty three years of age, Charles Austin about 22 years of age, and
William Henry about twenty years of age.
In Witness Whereof, I hereto set my hand and affix my seal, this 14"
day of December 1861.

Corporation of Fredericksburg, To wit;
I George F. Chew, a Notary Public for the Corporation afore=
said, in the State of Virginia, do certify that James Peyton, whose name is signed to
the writing hereto annexed, bearing date on the 14" day of January 1861, has acknow=
=ledged the same before me, in my Corporation aforesaid--

Clerks Office of the Corporation Court of Fredericksburg, August 29" 1862.
This deed was received in the Office, and with the Certificate
of its Acknowledgement annexed, admitted to record.
