Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents, that I, Alexander K. Phillips,
Executor of Samuel Phillips decd in pursuance of the request of my testator
and in consideration of five dollars to me in hand paid, have manumitted
and set free, a negro man slave named Theophilus Bankhead, and I
hereby declare him the said Theophilus Bankhead to be entirely liberated
from slavery, and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free per
son, with which it is in my power to vest him. He the said Theophilus
Bankhead hereby emancipated is a man yellow complexion, about five
feet eight inches high and about forty five years of age.
In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal
this 1st day of January 1860
