Articles of agreement entered into between John Farnehoug[h]
of the Town of Fredericksburg and state of Virginia and Robert Mercer
of the aforesaid town and state whereas the said Farnehough has
belonging to him a negro Slave named Charles a wheelwright by
trade and is desirous of stimulating him to a Faithfull discharge
of his duty as his slave for twelve years ensuing the date here of and
the said Charles upon condition that he shall be emancipated at
the expiration of the aforesaid twelve years promisses to be a faithf[ull]
Sober Industrious Tradesman, the said John Farnehough in conside=
ration of the premises & of five shillings to him in hand paid by
the aforesaid Robert Mercer the receipt where of the said John
Farnehough doth acknowledge hereby Doth Covenant and grant
for himself his heirs Executors Administrators and assigns to &
with the said Robert Mercer his heirs executors and Admors
that provided the said Charles shall [illegible] himself as a faithfull
Sober industrious Tradesman for and during twelve Years ensuing the date hereof he
the said John Farnehough his heirs executors Administrators or assigns at the expiration of the said twelve Years will do and execute every act or acts
thing or things whatsoever may be required by the laws of this

County for the emancipation of the said Slave Charles and for the due
performance thereof the said John Ferneyhough doth hereby bind him=
self his heirs executors administrators and assigns in the final
sum of one hundred and fifty pounds Virginia money to be paid
to the Robert Mercer his heirs Executors or administrators provided
nevertheless that it is the true interest and meaning of these presents
that if the said Slave Charles shall on any Day or Days or for any
length of time whatsoever neglect his work that the said time
that shall be made up to the said John Farneyhough his heirs &c
at the expiration of the aforesaid twelve years unless such loss of
time proceed from the act of providence and not from the
act of the aforesaid Charles In Witness whereof the said John
Farneyhough hath hereunto affixed his hand and seal this
the first Day of January Anno Domini one thousand seven
hundred and ninety five

27 day of Februrary 1795. These articles of agreement were acknowledged
by the said John Ferneyhough & Ordered to be Recorded
