Know all men by these presents that I William E. Beckwith, of the County of Fairfax and State of Virginia, for divers good causes me thereto moving, have manumitted and set free from slavery, and do hereby manumit and set free from slavery my negro woman named Caroline Elzey, sometimes called Caroline Beckwith, about twenty seven years of age, a bright mulatto, stout made, dark hair and dark eyes, no apparent marks or scars. And I do hereby give, grant, and release unto the said Caroline all my right, title, and claim of, in and to her person, labor, and services, and, of, in and to all the estate and property which she may hereafter acquire or obtain. Witness my hand and seal this 14th day of August 1857.

Fairfax County to wit
I D. Kincheloe, a Justice of the Peace in the County aforesaid and State of Virginia, do certify that Wm E. Beckwith, whose name is signed to the writing above bearing date the 14th day of August 1857 has acknowledged the same before me in my county aforesaid.

In the Clerk’s Office at Fairfax County Court August 15th 1857. This deed of emancipation from William E. Beckwith to Caroline, was received, and having been acknowledged before a Justice, admitted to record.
