In the name of God, Amen. I Edward Bates of the County of Fairfax and State of Virginia, being of sound mind but afflicted in body and impressed with the uncertainty of life, do hereby make this my last will and testament, and do hereby revoke all former wills by me made. I do hereby bequeath to my beloved wife Kezia Bates all of my household furniture to dispose of as she may deem best and all of my estate during her natural life or rather the profits and interest of the same after my just debts shall have been paid, and at her demise I bequeath to my daughter Louisa J. Lockwood the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars, and the balance of my estate real and personal to be equally divided between my sons Robert W. Bates, William H. Bates, Edgar H. Bates, and John E. Bates. I desire my servant Adaline now residing in the District of Columbia to be released from bondage at the age of twenty five, and should she have children, they are likewise to be liberate a the same age viz twenty five. I do constitute my son William H. Bates my executor upon all my estate in the State of Virginia, and John E. Bates my executor in the District of Columbia, and they are hereby empowered to sell all or any portion of my estate previous to my wife’s death if they think it advisable. And should any portion thereof remain unsold at my wife’s death, it shall be sold by my executors aforesaid and be equally divided between my sons aforesaid as herein stipulated after my daughter Louis J. Lockwood shall have received two hundred and fifty dollars. Given under my hand this 27th day of January eighteen hundred and fifty seven.

At a Court of Quarterly Sessions held for the County of Fairfax at the courthouse thereof on Monday the 16th day of March 1857. This last will and testament of Edward Bates, dec’d, was this day presented to the court and, being proved by the oaths of William B. Day and W.H. Huson, two of the subscribing witnesses thereto, is admitted to probate and ordered to be recorded.
