Know all men by these presents that I Joseph Janney of Prince William County in the State of Virginia, in consideration of five hundred dollars to me in hand paid by a negro man named James Washington, a resident of the County of Fairfax, in the state aforesaid, do hereby manumit and set free the said James from slavery. The said James is now about fifty years old and was by me purchased from William Selecman with the intention to permit him by his earnings to pay for himself and thereby obtain his liberty. Given under my hand and seal this twentieth day of October 1856.
