Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents that I James Taylor of the Town of Alexandria, County of Fairfax and Commonwealth of Virginia, being now the lawful owner and possessor of a negro man named and called Samuel Jacobs as well for and in consideration of five shillings current money of Virginia to me in hand paid by the said Samuel Jacobs, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged as for the faithful services the said Samuel as a slave hath rendered. I the said James Taylor have emancipated and set free, and by these presents do emancipate and set free the said Samuel Jacobs, and so to remain free forever, agreeable to an Act of Assembly in such cases made and provided. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty first day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety four.

At a court continued and held for the County of Fairfax 21st October 1794. James Taylor acknowledged this deed of manumission to negro Samuel Jacobs to be his act and deed, which is ordered to be recorded.
