This indenture made this twenty first day of September in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety between John Hawkins of the Town of Alexandria County of Fairfax and Commonwealth of Virginia of the one part and negro Jerry his slave of the same place of the other part. Witnesseth that the said John Hawkins for and in consideration of the faithful services which the said slave hath rendered him and is willing to render him for four years next from and after the first day of August last, and for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings current money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said slave, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged. He the said John Hawkins hath emancipated and set free, and by these presents doth emancipate and set free his said negro slave named Herry from and after the first day of August in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety four, till which time he the said John Hawkins hath hired the said slave to a certain Jesse Simms of Alexandria aforesaid. In witness whereof the said John Hawkins hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day, month and year first herein written.
