Whereas the late Hugh Adams of Rockbridge County, State of Virginia, by his
last will, emancipated his slaves, amongst whom was a negro woman, named
Scylla Jane, who is now the wife of my negro man, named William Haliburton
aged about thirty years. And the said Scylla Jane having purchased from
me, the said slave William, for the sum of fifteen hundred dollars, which has
been paid to me, for her by the Executor of said Hugh Adams, and desired me

his wife Scylla Jane to the Colony of Liberia, for which they will embark during
the coming month. Be it therefore known to all men, by these presents, that I
Andrew Patterson of said County, in consideration of the premises & of the said
sum of fifteen hundred dollars, have manumitted & set free from slavery & do
hereby manumit & set free from slavery, my said negro man named William
Haliburton aged about thirty. And I do hereby grant & release unto the said
William all my right, title & claim of, in & to his person, labor & services & of & in
& to all the estate & property he may hereafter acquire or obtain. In witness whereof I
Andrew Patterson, have hereunto set my hand & seal this 31st day of March 1860.
