Text of Freedom Document
To all whom these presents shall come Know ye that I Elizabeth Jones of the County of Essex in the Commonwealth of Virginia being possessed of a Negro man slave named George Dunkin And whereas by an act of the general Assembly entitled “An Act to authorize the Manumission of slaves” passed at the May Session in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty two it is enacted “that it shall hereafter be Lawful for any person by his or her last will and Testament or by any other Instrument in Writing under his or her hand and seal attested and proved in the County Court by two Witnesses or acknowledged by the party in the Court of the County where he or she resides to emancipate and set free his or her slaves or any of them, who shall thereupon be entirely and fully discharged from the performance of any contract entered into during servitude and enjoy as full Freedom as if they had been particularly named and freed by the before recited Act. I the said Elizabeth Jones for and in consideration of the sum of Seventy five pounds Current money of Virginia to me in hand paid by the said Slave George before the signing & Sealing hereof, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged. Doth for myself my heirs Executors and administrators by these presents and by virtue of the before recited act of the General Assembly Emancipate and set free the aforesaid slave George Dunkin forever and do declare the said Slave free and discharged from his servitude and that he may acquire Property possess and enjoy it, and his Freedom and Liberty in as full and Ample manner as the Citizens of this Commonwealth In Witness thereof I have hereunto set my hand and Affixed my seal the Twenty eight Day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety two.

At a Court held for the County of Essex at Tappa. on the 16th Day of April 1792. This Instrument of Writing for the emancipation of George Dunkin a negroe man slave was proved by the oaths of John Montague and John Montague Junr. and ordered to be recorded.
