Know all men by these presents that I John Stratton Jun’r of the County of Northampton and State of Virginia, from full persuasion that freedom is the natural right of all men, do hereby manumit and set free all the negroes that I am possessed of, to wit, Liverpool man thirty nine, Esther girl eighteen, Judah twelve, Abel twelve, Peter son of Pegg seven, and Peter son of Elizabeth seven years of age, so that henceforth they the aforenamed negroes shall be deemed, adjudged and taken as and for free people, that is to say Liverpool from this day, and Esther, Judah, Abel, Peter (son of Pegg) and Peter (son of Elizabeth) when they arrive at twenty one years of age to be at liberty to act for themselves without the let, hindrance, or molestation of me or any person or persons claiming or to claim by from or under me forever. In testimony whereof I do hereunto set my hand and affix my seal this 1st day of January one thousand seven hundred and eighty eight.

At a court held for Northampton County the 8th day of July 1788. This deed of emancipation was acknowledged by John Stratton Jun’r party thereto to be his act and deed and ordered to be recorded.
