Text of Freedom Document

I George Pitts of Northampton County and State of Virginia in the name of God do make this my last will and testament in manner and form as followeth, to wit. I leave my slave Saul to be hired out yearly for seven years and the money arising from the hire to be equally divided between my wife and child, and at the expiration of that time I will him to be free forever.
Item. I give to Major Pettit a suit of my clothes, and my will is that the rest of my estate shall be sold, and that my child Matildah shall have one third part thereof forever.
Item. I give out of the other two thirds to Sally Pettit four pounds, and the rest of the two thirds I give to my loving wife Elizabeth Pitts forever, provided she accounts with her mother for her claim against me; but if my wife refuses to account with her mother, my will is that part of that money shall be put out to defray her yearly charge against my estate, but when that claim shall cease then as before, my will is that my wife shall have it forever. I nominate & appoint Hezekiah Pitts executor to this my last will & testament, as witness my hand & seal this 25th February 1788.
Signed, sealed, & acknowledged in presence of us George Pitts (seal)
