Know all men by these presents that I Hezekiah Pitts of the County of Northampton and State of Virginia for good causes moving me hereunto, and by virtue of an Act of the General Assembly of Virginia passed in the year of our Lord 1782 entitled “an act to authorize the manumission of slaves” do hereby emancipate the following negro slaves to be free after the following manner (viz) Betty Moses to be free immediately, Pleasant Hampton to be free immediately, Alles Exor aged seventeen years last May to be free at the age of twenty one, Esther Hampton aged thirteen last April to be free at twenty one; Joshua Hampton aged ten years last January to be free at D; Tabitha Moses aged five last September to be free at D; John Robins to be free January the first 1793; Charles Nuttle to be free January 1st 1792, Elsey Houlding to be free January 1st 1797, as by the above said Act of Assembly directed, and do hereby warrant and defend the freedom of said negroes against myself, my heirs, executors, administrators, and assigus under the penal sum of one thousand pounds current money of Virginia to be recovered by said negroes in case of any attempts to deprive them of their liberty by us as above granted. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this eighth day of July Anno Domini 1788.

At a court held for Northampton county the 8th day of July 1788. This deed of emancipation was acknowledged by Hezekiah Pitts party thereto to be his act and deed and ordered to be recorded.
