Text of Freedom Document

Know all men by these presents that I Dickie Dunton of the County of Northampton and State of Virginia, for good causes and considerations me hereunto moving, and by virtue of an Act of the General Assembly of Virginia, passed in the year of our Lord 1782 entitled “An act to authorize the manumission of slaves” do emancipate and absolutely set free the following negro slaves, to wit, one negro slave called Luse to be entirely free and at her own liberty on the fourteenth of June 1791; a boy Ben to be free and at his own liberty on the first day of August 1798; and Sear to be free and at her own liberty on the first day of June 1798, as by said Act of Assembly is directed: and I do hereby warrant and defend the freedom of said negroes against myself, my heirs, executors, and administrators, and against all persons whatsoever, claiming the same, under the penal sum of one hundred pounds current money to be recovered by each of the said negroes in case of any attempt to deprive them of their liberty so as above granted. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day of June Anno Domini 1788.

At a court held for Northampton County the 10th day of June 1788. This deed of manumission was acknowledged by Dicke Dunton party thereto to be his act and deed, and ordered to be recorded.
