Know all men by these presents that I John Guy of the County of Northampton and State of Virginia for good causes & considerations me hereunto moving, and by virtue of an act of the Gen. Assembly of Virginia passed in the year of our Lord 1782 entitled “An act to authorize the manumission of slaves” do emancipate and set absolutely free the following negro slaves (to wit) two negro men slaves called Mark & Matthew, and the following negro women slaves Frank, Peg, Betty, & Aimey to be entirely free and at their own liberty on the first day of January 1787, also a negro boy called Robin to be free at the end of his twenty fourth year of his age, and negroes Ben, Sciller, Grace & Esther to be free and at their own liberty as they severally arrive at the age of twenty one & eighteen as by the said act of assembly is directed. And I do hereby warrant & defend the title of the said negroes to their freedom so as above granted against myself, my heirs, Exors, and Administrators, and against all persons whatsoever claiming the said slaves by, from, or under me; under the penal sum of one hundred pounds current money to be recovered by each of the said negroes in case of any attempt by me or those claiming from me to deprive them of their liberty so as aforesaid granted. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12th day of December Anno Domini 1786.

At a court held for Northampton County the 14th day of February 1787. This deed of emancipation was acknowledged by John Guy party thereto to be his act and deed and ordered to be recorded.
