Text of Freedom Document
I Elizabeth Eley of Southampton County in Virginia haveing
under my care a negro woman named Rose, aged Thirty seven
years whom I have herebefore held a slave, but being fully pers --
uaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind,-- & that
it is my duty to do to others as I would be done by, do Therefore
hereby Emancipate and set her the said Rose free, and I do for
myself my heirs Executors & Admors relinquish all my right
Title Interest & Claim or pretention of claim whatsoever either
to her person or to any Estate she may hereafter acquire, &
having also Three who are now in their minority Vizt David a
Boy born the tenth Day of the fifth Month 1778. Venus a girl
Born the first Day of the fourth month 1769, and Judah a
Girl born the first Day of the fourth month 1771 whom I like-
wise emancipate Set free, yet I think it right for me to have
the care & Direction of the said David untill he shall attain
to the age of twenty one years, & of the said Venus & Judah
Till they shall attain to the age of Eighteen years -- and
I do for myself my heirs Executors and Admors Relinquish
all my right Title Interest & Claim or pretention of Claim what
soever Either to their persons or to any Estate they may acquire
after they shall attain to the full & Lawfull age aforesaid.
All the above said Negroes and Their posterity to Enjoy their
Full Freedom without any Interruption from me or any person
Claiming for by or under me In Witness Whereof I have
Hereunto set my hand and Seal this 8th day of the month
in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred
and Eighty two ---

At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 14th
Day of November 1782
This deed was proved by the affirmation
of Thomas Ricks & Jordan Denson two of the witnesses
Thereto & Ordered to be Recorded ---
