Text of Freedom Document
Know all men by these presents that I Eliza T. Macfarlane, Executrix of the last will and testament of Elizabeth Carter deceased late of the County of King George and whose last will and testament is duly recorded in said county, do hereby declare that negroes Betty Perkins, Charity Conders, Matilda Conders, James Henry Conders, Kitty Conders, Bartlett Conders, Winney Champayne, Jack Champayne, Rebecca Champayne, Hugh Payne, Juday Payne, Esther Champayne, Thomas Champayne, Winney Ann Berry, Caroline Payne, Watt Payne, Adelaide Payne, Alfred Champayne, Ben Payne, Jack Payne & Alfred Payne the last three of whom are negroes derived from Nancy Carter dec’d as her portion of the dower slaves, and Susan Matthews, Lucinda Parker, Sally Carter, Patsey Carter, Jane Park, Frances Park and Nelly Payne, Milley Payne, Champ Parker & Patsey Baker are the same negroes mentioned and referred to in the will of the said Elizabeth Carter deceased or those born since her death, & are therefore entitled to enjoy and have their liberty as free & emancipated slaves. And I the said Eliza T. Macfarlane acting under the direction of said will do hereby further declare that they the adults among said slaves have my permission to obtain the evidence of their freedom from the Clerk of the County Court of King George at my expense and I do hereby direct said clerk to give each of them a copy of this instrument or an extract therefrom duly authenticated & such other instrument as may be required by law to enable them or either of them to go free. And I do hereby further consent & agree that the infants herein before mentioned may also go with their parents & when they shall severally attain the age of twenty one years that they may also obtain the evidence of their freedom from the Clerk aforesaid. In testimony whereof the party hereto has set her hand & seal this 4th day of November 1846.

Corporation of Fredericksburg to wit
We W.C. Beale and Robert Dickey Justice of the Peace for the Corporation aforesaid in the State of Virginia do hereby certify that Eliza T. Macfarland party to a certain instrument hereto annexed, personally appeared before us in our corporation aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be her act and deed and desired us to certify the said acknowledgment to the Clerk of the County Court of King George in order that the same may be recorded.
Give under our hands & seals this 4th day of November 1846.

In Clerk’s Office of King George County Court November 5th 1846
The aforegoing deed from Eliza T. Macfarland Executors of Elizabeth Carter to Betty Perkins & others, slaves emancipated by the last will and testament of the said Elizabeth Carter deceased, being this day received in my office, was together with the certificate of acknowledgment thereon endorsed, admitted to record.

Corporation of Fredericksburg to wit
