Text of Freedom Document

In the name of God Amen. I John Lewis Alexander being of weak body but sound mind, do make this my last will and testament after all my just debts are paid, I give and bequeath my whole estate both real and personal to the use of my brother Philip Thornton Alexander and his wife during their natural lives, and to the use of the survivor of them and after the decease of my said brother and his wife to such child or children as they may leave to them and their heirs forever. It is my will and desire that my two negro slaves named Mingo and Jack be manumitted and set free by my Executors and that my estate be burdened with their maintenance agreeable to law.
It is my will and desire that my estate both real and personal should go and descend to the children of Doctor Gibeon Stewart, late of King George County to them and their heirs forever in case my brother Philip should die without issue. I give my gold watch that my grandfather Willis now wears to my cousin Hannah Battaite. Lastly, I appoint John Taliaferro Jun’r and Will’m Thornton Alexander Executors of this my last will and testament and trustees to carry the uses of the same into effect. In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 11 May 1802.
