Know all men by these presents that whereas I Robert Carter of Baltimore County in the State of Maryland am possessed of part of sundry negroes mentioned in a schedule annexed to a deed of emancipation bearing date the 1st day of August in the year 1791 recorded in Northumberland District Court held at Northumberland Courthouse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Now know ye that I the said Robert Carter have made, constitute & appointed, and by these presents do make, constitute & appoint Elder Benjamin Dawson of Westmoreland County of the Commonwealth aforesaid my true & lawful attorney for me & in my name to dispose of the said remaining negroes & their issue which were & have been born since the aforesaid deed of emancipation was recorded to any person or persons according to the covenants respecting the time of their servitude specified in said deed of emancipation. And for whatsoever my said attorney shall lawfully do touching us and concurring the said remaining negroes these presents shall be to him a sufficient warrant. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 24th day of Nov. 1796.
