Text of Freedom Document

Whereas the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia did in the year 1782 enact a law entitled “An Act to Authorize the Manumission of Slaves”.
Know all men by these presents that I Robert Carter of Nomony Hall in the County of Westmoreland do under the said act for myself, my heirs, executors, and administrators emancipate and forever set free from slavery the following negroes viz: Sarah Bruters, Judith Bruters, Abby Gumby, Sampson Robinson, James Robinson, Charlotte Newman, Dinah Richards, Aggy Robinson. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this second day of January in the year of our Lord seventeen hundred and ninety two.
Robert Carter (seal)
At a court of quarterly sessions held for Westmoreland County the 29th day of May 1792. This deed of manumission was acknowledged by Robert Carter party thereto and ordered to be recorded.
