Text of Freedom Document

Whereas the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the year 1782 enact a law entitled “an act to authorize the manumission of slaves”.
Know all men by these presents that I Robert Carter of Nomony Hall in the County of Westmoreland do under the said act for myself, my heirs, executors, and administrators emancipate and for ever set free from slavery the following negroes viz. Joe Reid, Robert Roberson, Anthony Harris, Kizziah Harris, Polly Harrison, and Sarah Timothy Toppett.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this second day of January in the year of our Lord seventeen hundred and ninety two.
Robert Carter (seal)
At a court held for Westmoreland County the 24th day of April 1792. This deed of manumission was acknowledged by Robert Carter and ordered to be recorded. The court having examined the above named negroes agreeable to the above recited act are of opinion the said negroes are above the ages of twenty one, and eighteen years, and under the ages of forty five years, that they are of sound minds and bodies and to be certified accordingly.
