To All whom these presents shall come _
Know ye that by an act of the General
Assembly of Virginia passed in May 1792 entitled
“An act to authorize the manumission of
Slaves,” those persons who are disposed to emancipate
their slaves are empowered to do_ And whereas
Almighty God hath so ordered human events,
that liberty has become a general topic _ I
Frederick Bonner of Dinwiddie County being
possessed of Slaves & from clear conviction of the
injustice & criminality of depriving my fellow
creatures of their natural right, do hereby emancipate
& set free, from a state of slavery the following
Negroes, namely Sam, Sels, Lucy, who are all well
& found nearly in the prime of life, Heartwell,
Burwell, Liza & Lettice these four last men-
tioned being in a state of non age, I desire to have
the guardian care of them ‘til they come to the
age of twenty one which will happen at the following
periods. Hartwell will be of age in January
1800, Burwell will be of age in December 1806
Liza will be of age in July 1808, Lettice will be of age
December 1790 declaring the said Negroes entirely
free from me, my heirs, Exors & to all intents &
Purposes, entitled to all the privileges granted in the [illegible]
before recited act_ In testimony whereof I
have hereunto set my hand & Seal the 21 day
of January [illegible] 1788
